The little lagoon town of Bacalar is a breath of fresh air from the typical Mexico hot spots like Cancun and Tulum. The pueblo magico still holds all the charm of Mexico without the high prices and crowds.
Famous for the seven-color lagoon, Bacalar is often referred to as the Maldives of Mexico and you’ll soon see why. Days are spent sailing around the lagoon, biking the small town, and of course, indulging in tacos, marquesitas (a nutella-stuffed crepe), and lots of cerveza.
But while the town is small, choosing where to stay in Bacalar or near the town center can make all the difference in your trip. The best place to stay will completely depend on YOU and what you want to get up to in your time in Bacalar.
In this guide, I’ll help you discover all the best places to stay in Bacalar – whether you’re budget-backpacking your way around Mexico or looking for something a little different for your annual family vacation.
So, let’s dive in and find out where in Bacalar is best for you.

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Bacalar?
Bacalar is a place made of magic that backpackers in Central America would be crazy to miss. The ocean is a shade of blue I’ve never seen before, the food makes my mouth water just thinking about it, and hanging out in the small town is such a vibe. However, there are a few areas to know about before you decide where to book your stay.
In this article, I’m going to dive into each area in more detail. However, if you’re short on time and just want to TLDR version. Here are my top picks for places to stay in Bacalar.
Bacalar My Love Front Laguna | Best Hotel in Bacalar
Bacalar My Love Front offers romantic log cabins with INSANE views across the sea for the perfect getaway with your lover. Enjoy lagoon views from your private terrace and direct water access.
The hotel provides kayaks and has a lush green garden to relax in after a day on the sea. If you’re wondering where to stay in Bacalar for a romantic weekend away… look no further, amigos.
Che Bacalar Hostel & Bar Adults Only | Best Hostel in Bacalar
One of the most popular places to stay in Bacalar is Che Bacalar Hostel & Bar, an adults-only hostel with a fun and lively atmosphere. If you’re looking for a night out, the hostel has its own bar, pool, and drinking games usually going all night long.
The dorm rooms are clean and comfortable, perfect for solo travelers or groups. Private rooms are also available. It’s one of Mexico’s best hostels for backpackers.
Hakuna Matata Glamping | Best Glamping in Bacalar
If you’re on a budget, look no further than Hakuna Matata Glamping for a unique and affordable stay in Bacalar. This eco-friendly campsite offers charming cabins with comfortable beds, shared bathrooms, and a shared kitchen.
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. It’s also conveniently located near the town center and the lagoon giving you the best of both.
Bacalar Neighborhood Guide – Best Places to Stay in Bacalar
Lagoon Front
Bacalar doesn’t get better than waking up to the waves lapping on the shore and the sun rising over the lagoon. This is why staying on the lagoon is the best option for first-timers.
Bacalar City Center
It’s less of a city center and more of a beautiful little square with different restaurants, a few bars, and, of course, the amazing street carts selling tacos and marquesitas.
Outside of the City Center
Bacalar is one of the few places in Mexico that hasn’t experienced over-tourism. The town is full of traditional family homes and locals living their daily lives, so a lot of the bigger stays are located outside the city center.
Bacalar is often missed by travelers when backpacking in Mexico because it’s just about the furthest town you can get from Cancun without crossing over into Belize. You’ll have to travel through Playa del Carmen and Tulum to get there but trust me; it’s worth it!
While most of Quintana Roo is known for all parties and beaches, Bacalar offers something completely different and unique. The small town is located on the Bacalar Lagoon, a stunning body of water with crystal clear blue waters that look more like cool blue Gatorade than fresh water. It’s often referred to as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors” because of all the different shades of blue.
Deciding where to stay in Bacalar isn’t hard if you know what you want. The town is in blocks long and wide. You could walk the entire town in under an hour, so most places are relatively close to each other.
The most popular area of town to stay in is without a doubt the lagoon front. With some of the most amazing sunrises and sunsets, it’s no surprise that many hotels have popped up along the lagoon’s shore. You can choose from luxurious resorts or cozy eco-friendly bungalows, all with stunning views of the lagoon.
Another great option is to stay close to the city center (it’s more like a small square rather than a center). Here you’ll be within walking distance of all the local shops, best tacos, and bars. It’s also where you’ll find the town’s budget-friendly stays. From hostels for all you solo travelers in Mexico to lovely homestays, you can find something affordable for any budget.
If you’re looking for a more secluded stay, families will absolutely love the quiet and private homes or villas scattered on the outskirts of town. (Outskirts sounds far, but don’t worry, you can still walk to most places.) These options offer a more intimate experience and are perfect for those looking to disconnect from the world and truly relax.
Bacalar’s Three Best Neighborhoods to Stay in
After visiting Bacalar four times, I’ve stayed in each of these three areas and can genuinely say you won’t go wrong either way, but there is always a better fit for each traveler.
So now that you’ve had a small glimmer of what they offer let’s fully dive in and find you the best place to stay in Bacalar.
1. Lagoon Front – Where to Stay in Bacalar for Your First Time
Bacalar doesn’t get better than waking up to the waves lapping on the shore and the sun rising over the lagoon. This is why staying on the lagoon is the best option for first-timers. Mostly everyone will be spending their days on the lagoon at some capacity. So making it your backyard is a no-brainer.
Bacalar is for enjoying the great outdoors, morning yoga sessions (you’ll find incredible yoga retreats in Bacalar), stand-up paddle boarding and simply just lounging. Plus, the lagoon is just a quick 10-minute walk into town, so if you want a night of beers or brunch in town, you’ll still have the best of both worlds.
Bacalar My Love Front Laguna | Best Hotel in Bacalar Lagoon Front
Couples will absolutely dig this stay at Bacalar My Love Front Laguna. With private log cabins, it’s the perfect getaway. Enjoy lagoon views from your private terrace, direct water access, complimentary kayaks, and a green garden to relax in after a day on the water. It’s the perfect place to stay to chill out and enjoy this beautiful Mexican beach town.
Che Bacalar Hostel & Bar Adults Only | Best Hostel in Bacalar Lagoon Front
Che Hostel is one of the best hostels in Bacalar. The hostel itself is on the road behind the lagoon but you are still just a short walk to the water. The hostel offers both dorms and private rooms.
They have a rooftop space for those working from their laptops in Mexico and a downstairs pool and bar area that seems to be going off at all hours of the day.
The Yak Lake House | Best Lake House in Bacalar Lagoon Front
The Yak Lake House is my favorite stay in all of Bacalar. Located right on the lagoon with a deck leading out to the waters, it’s one of the most sociable stays in Bacalar. With a tour company on site, you can join sailing trips, sunrise yoga classes, or just relax on lounge chairs while sipping cocktails out back.
Things to See and Do on the Lagoon Front of Bacalar
- Go on a sailing trip around the lagoon
- Paddleboard to Pirates Channel
- Visit the Cenote Azul and swim in its crystal clear waters
- Watch sunrise and sunset from the lagoon
- Take a paddleboard yoga class at the Yak

View on Osprey View on REI2. Bacalar City Center – Best Place to Stay in Bacalar on a Budget
Regardless of where you stay, you’ll find yourself in the city center more than once. And it’s less of a city center and more of a beautiful little square with different restaurants, a few bars, and, of course, the amazing street carts selling tacos and marquesitas.
It’s also where you’ll find the majority of the budget-friendly accommodations in Bacalar. It’s an excellent place to stay because it’s a quick walk to the lagoon, but once the sun goes down, the city center comes alive with live music and a laid-back atmosphere. If you’re traveling on a budget, this is the spot for you.
Hotel Henry Bacalar | Best Hotel in Bacalar Center
Hotel Henry is an excellent stay for those who want to enjoy the nature and simplicity of Bacalar. The hotel has a lush garden with a large pool to cool off when you’re not exploring the lagoon. But keep in mind, this isn’t a party hotel. They have a curfew at 12 am to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for all guests.
Hostal & Suites Pata de Perro | Best Hostel in Bacalar Center
It doesn’t get more central than Hostal & Suites Pata de Perro, located in the heart of Bacalar center. This hostel is perfect for budget travelers who still want to be close to all the action.
The hostel literally opens up to the square with a lively atmosphere and plenty of street food vendors. But don’t worry, the hostel itself is still quiet enough for a good night’s sleep and for those wanting a more chilled experience, it’s one of the best hostels in Bacalar for sure.
Hakuna Matata Glamping | Best Camping in Bacalar Center
For a unique stay in Bacalar, Hakuna Matata Glamping is my favorite choice. With budget-friendly huts, this is the perfect spot for those who want to immerse themselves in nature. The huts are comfortable and cozy with a shared outdoor kitchen and bathrooms.
Plus, the location is unbeatable – right in the heart of Bacalar with easy access to all the popular activities.
Things to See and Do in Bacalar City Center
- Walk along the Fuerte de San Felipe, a historical fort built in the 18th century to protect Bacalar from pirates.
- Visit Cocalitos, a popular beach club with water hammocks and white sandy beaches
- Float down Los Rapidos, a gorgeous natural canal that feeds into the Bacalar Lagoon
- Rent a bike and ride through the town, stopping at local shops and street vendors along the way
- Read a book on the deck of La Playita while eating some ceviche and drinking a beer.
3. Outside of the City Center – Best Neighborhood in Bacalar for Families to Stay In
Bacalar is one of my favorite places to stay in Mexico as it’s one of the few places that hasn’t experienced over-tourism. (let’s hope it stays that way!) The town is still full of traditional family homes and locals living their daily lives, so a lot of the bigger stays are located just outside the city center.
So if you’re traveling with family or a bigger group, this might be your best option. It’s still close enough to all the action but offers a more peaceful and family-friendly atmosphere. Plus, with everything being walkable in Bacalar, you won’t miss out on any of the fun!
Bacalar Sunshine | Best Hotel in the Bacalar
Groups traveling on a budget will froth at this hotel in Bacalar. Bacalar Sunshine has everything you need to keep the kids entertained and have a nice place to rest your head.
With large family rooms and a swimming pool, everyone can have their own space while staying on the property. If you’re traveling as a family, this one’s for you.
2nd story holiday home | Best Home in Bacalar
This traditional Mexican-style home is absolutely stunning. It sleeps five and has plenty of room for everyone. Only 7 blocks from the lagoon, this is an excellent stay for those who want to cook at home in a beautiful stone kitchen and spend their days down by the water.
The rooftop terrace is the perfect place to take in the sunset with a glass of wine and enjoy the warm Mexican air. If you’re traveling as a couple and are looking for some romance.. this Airbnb is for you.
Aparthotel | Best Apartment in Bacalar
A home away from home is what awaits you at this apartment in Bacalar. With nature in mind, the owners have incorporated elements of stone and greenery into its design, giving it a magical and tranquil vibe.
Located within walking distance to the center and the lagoon, it’s the perfect choice to experience the best of Bacalar.

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQs About Where to Stay in Bacalar
Here’s the spot where I go over a few of the most frequently asked questions, cus I’m good like that!
What To Pack For Bacalar
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Bacalar
If you haven’t figured it out by now, the best place to stay in Bacalar is on the Lagoon Front. It’s the main attraction of visiting Bacalar, and while I’m all for saving money, I don’t think it’s that much more expensive to stay on the lagoon vs in town.
If you’re still unsure where to crash when you arrive, I’d recommend bacalar My Love Front Laguna as the BEST hotel with an incredible view of the sea. This is one of those places that you just can’t go wrong with.
Or, if you’re on a tighter budget (or just want to meet some new friends), Che Bacalar Hostel & Bar Adults Only is the best place for you. With a pool and epic social events, it’s an easy win for backpackers.
But overall, if you stay in town, outside of town, or right on the water, it’s crucial you get your ass to Bacalar ASAP. The town is so magical and full of so many unique experiences, it’s a must-visit destination in Mexico. So don’t stress too much about where to stay, just get there and enjoy the lagoon!
