Mexico Travel FAQs
Is Mexico safe for backpackers?
Mexico is generally straightforward to travel around, but safety varies considerably between regions. Stick to sensible precautions, research the areas you're visiting and check the latest travel advice before you go. Tourist areas are generally well set up for travellers, but it's important not to assume the whole country is the same.
Do you need to speak Spanish to travel around Mexico?
Not necessarily, particularly in popular tourist areas, but knowing some basic Spanish will make travelling much easier. A few words and phrases can go a long way when ordering food, taking local transport or exploring somewhere away from the main tourist trail.
What's the deal with Day of the Dead in Mexico?
Day of the Dead is a colourful celebration honouring loved ones who have died, usually taking place around 1 and 2 November. Expect altars, candles, flowers, food and plenty of painted skulls, but it's much more than a party. If you're visiting during this period, take some time to understand the traditions and respect the significance behind them.
What should you eat in Mexico?
Tacos are only the beginning. Try regional dishes like mole in Oaxaca, cochinita pibil in Yucatán, pozole in Mexico City and fresh seafood along the coast. Street food is a huge part of Mexican culture, so follow the crowds, grab a plate and see what you discover.
