Tucked away at the bottom of the Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu is a beach town haven that seems a world away from the hooter-buzzing streets of Seminyak and Canggu. This laid-back village, nestled against the cliffside and blessed with world-class waves, is made for surfers.

The main section of Uluwatu is a small stretch of beach of about one road. But, for the sake of this article, I’ve included the greater Uluwatu area stretching to Bingin and Dreamland, two more epic surf breaks.

If you’re searching for a place with easy access to the ocean, it can be tricky to understand which properties are by the beach and which aren’t. I’m here to simplify things with a list of top beach villas.

There are plenty of places to stay here, ranging from low-cost homestays to ultra-luxurious hotels and resorts. Somewhere in the middle, my recommended type of accommodation for surfers is one of the best surf villas in Uluwatu. Located by the sea with private gardens and pools, you’ll get the most bang for your buck staying in a villa.

Let’s dive right into the best villas in the neighbourhood, from those suitable for families to those designed for couples!

Staying in a Surf Villa in Uluwatu

What makes Uluwatu a super cool place to stay in Bali is its seamless fusion of gorgeous landscapes, cultural richness, and, of course, its surfing legacy.

But it’s not all about waves here. The beaches are uncrowded compared with other parts of Bali, mainly because to get to the beautiful beaches, you’ll need to make your way down intricate stairways and ladders. Nothing we can’t handle, right?!

Imagine waking up in your own villa, enjoying coffee on the balcony as you check the surf, and running down one of Bali’s best beaches to catch the wave of your life. It doesn’t get better than this, folks.

Villas stand out as the best choice for surfers for a few reasons. First, they are typically located directly on the beachfront or a short walk from it. No need to lug your boards to the beach and back!

Second, they’re equipped with full kitchens to nourish and replenish your energy after a day in the sea. And third, they usually come with a private garden and pool, necessary for a rinse and relaxation after paddling your heart out in the water.

What to Look For in a Surf Villa in Uluwatu

If you’re travelling with your family, I recommend you find a property with a pool (luckily, most have one) as well as separate bedrooms. Young kids might be at risk of falling in the pool, so if this is the case, find one with a fence or scratch the pool idea, just to be safe.

If you’re visiting with a group of friends, you’ll want a villa with a comfortable shared living space. Most of the top surf villas have balconies overlooking the sea. They also include indoor and outdoor living spaces that make it possible to hang out together while you’re cooking, relaxing and socializing.

For a touch of extravagance, there are a few fully serviced villas in the bunch. Wake up to freshly prepared breakfast, forget about making your bed, and make use of facilities like spas and restaurants on site.

The best surf villas in Uluwatu can be found on Booking.com and Airbnb. Filter your search to private homes, and you’ll be presented with more options than you thought possible.

Villa Kayu Merah at Akilea Villas

    Akilea Villas bali

Villas are no doubt the best option for surfer families visiting Uluwatu. They’re spacious and private and include all the necessities you might need to keep your kids safe (and busy). Villa Kayu Merah at Akilea Villas is as traditional as Balinese villas get.

It features a huge open-concept living space that merges with the garden and pool area. With this layout, you can cook a feast in the kitchen or relax in the living room, all while keeping an eye on your kids splashing around in the pool.

Don’t Forget Your Uluwatu Travel Insurance

If you’re heading to Uluwatu, make sure you get some good Bali travel insurance. You are gonna need this, I won’t pretend it’s not essential.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Final Thoughts on Surf Villas in Uluwatu

In a town famous for its world-class surf waves, gorgeous cliffs, and hidden beaches, Uluwatu’s villas are the ultimate ticket to a tranquil coastal vacation.

Staying in one of the best surf villas in Uluwatu allows you to spread out across your own little slice of paradise. Store your boards in the shade, hang your swimsuits out to dry where you wish, and cook up the perfect post-surf meal in your very own kitchen.

Privacy meets luxury in these villas, where private pools and open-concept living spaces offer a taste of the ultimate Uluwatu experience.

Before you head off to your unique accommodation in Uluwatu, do yourself a favour and organise comprehensive travel and medical insurance for your trip. Surfing can be a dangerous sport, and you’ll want any and all accidents to be covered by your medical aid.
