Ahh Tassie, bloody oath! If you’re after some proper true blue Aussie adventures then, mate, this is the place to go.
Tasmania is everything the mainland is missing; I mean, you can actually see mountains here. (Disclaimer: yes, there are mountains on the mainland, bloody nice ones too, but I swear… these are better!) And holyyy, the untouched ruggedness will make nature lovers drop to their knees.
The island is home to some of the country’s most iconic natural wonders, including Cradle Mountain and Wineglass Bay. As Australia’s underdog, it often gets missed off travellers’ hit lists – which means that it is often a super chill, quiet place to visit.

This guide on where to stay in Tasmania will give all the most kick-arse areas for first-timers, budget backpackers, surfers, families, and even some insanely gorgeous hiking spots (which is what Tassie is all about).

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Tasmania?
While travelling in Australia, many backpackers miss off good ol’ Tassie from their hit list which is a damn shame. Tasmania is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in Australia.
In this article, I’ll dive into the best areas to stay and the best accommodations and things to do in each. However, if you’re short on time and just want the TLDR version – here are my top three picks for the best places to stay:
Cradle Highlander | Best Lodge In Tasmania
The Cradle Highlander offers you the ability to soak up the mountain air from a cosy spot in the wilderness. Nestled between Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair, this quaint lodge is the perfect stay for those who are looking to do some hiking while in Tassie.
In the winter, you can curl up by the fireplace, and in the summer, you can enjoy the front porch with a glass of wine.
Sanctuary Holiday Park | Best Glamping In Tasmania
This unique stay on the East Coast of Tasmania will blow your mind. The insanely awesome safari-style tents will make all other holiday parks look drab! Located right near a swell, surfers will love spending time here.
But even if you’re not into surfing, this spot is ideal for anyone looking to go camping without actually having to go camping. Ya, feel me?
The Alabama | Best Airbnb In Tasmania
Experience the quirk and charm of Hobart in the boutique hotel. Designed with locals in mind, the hotel features a mix of funky vintage and modern styles. Located right near the centre of Hobart, you’ll have easy access to all the food, shopping, and art that Tasmania’s capital has to offer.
Plus, there’s a gorgeous bar on the terrace for you to sip on some of Tasmania’s finest wines. Dreamy.
Tasmania Neighborhood Guide – Best Places to Stay in Tasmania
Hobart
Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and is located in the southeast. It’s hands down the best place to stay in Tasmania if you’re visiting for the first time. The town is a little quirky and has some epic nightlife.
Launceston
Backpackers unite! The city of Launceston is a budget traveller’s dream. Located in the north of Tasmania, this small riverside city offers some wallet relief and a little bit of burnout relief—mostly because there isn’t that much to do.
Devonport
On the northern coast lies the charming seaside town of Devonport. And while it’s the third largest city on the island, you won’t see a huge number of tourists here.
East Coast
Depending on what kind of surfing you’re looking for, the east coast of Tasmania has something for every level. From beginner-friendly breaks to more advanced reef breaks, there’s no shortage of options to catch some waves.
Cradle Mountain and Walls of Jerusalem
BEST mountains in Australia!! Tassie is def the place to go if you’re craving that crisp alpine air and some serious hiking. Cradle Mountain is an iconic spot for hikers, with a range of trail options to suit all levels.
Tasmania does not get enough credit for how insanely gorgeous it is. Always overlooked by the mainland, Tasmania is Australia’s golden child, and I’m pumped for you to explore it!
The island is incredibly easy to drive around, and the majority of attractions are outdoor activities. I am not exaggerating when I say EVERYTHING in Tasmania is beautiful. So, regardless of whether you have one week or a whole month, travelling around Tassie will blow your mind!
If it’s your first time visiting Tasmania, Hobart is a must-stay destination. One, because it’s the state capital and where you will most likely fly into, and two because there is so much to see and do here! Hobart is a city that has it all. From cultural museums to Australia’s best outdoor markets to trendy cafes with insanely good flat whites, it’s the perfect mix of history and modernity.
I really hate to break it to budget travellers, but Australia ain’t cheap, and Tassie is even more so. If you’re travelling on a budget, I recommend heading to Launceston, Tasmania’s second-largest city. It’s known for its beautiful parks, historic architecture, and charming cafes. Plus, it’s a great base to explore the north of the island, and it’s quite a bit cheaper than Hobart.
Tasmania is very family-friendly, but Devenport on the north coast is especially great for families. With so many different parks, gardens, and beaches to choose from, there will always be something for you and your family to do. It’s also a lot smaller than the other cities, making it easier to navigate with little ones in tow.
Hikers will be frothing at the mouth when they see the endless number of trails to explore on Tassie. The best area for hiking is definitely Cradle Mountain and the walls of Jerusalem. The landscape here is absolutely breathtaking, and the cabins are so cool. It’s got to be one of the most beautiful places in Australia.
Of course, no trip to Tasmania would be complete without catching some killer waves. Quite a few places around the island are great for surfing, but the top areas for surfers to stay in are along the East Coast. You can stay in some cosy bungalows or a cheap little surf shack and wake up to the sound of the waves crashing.
Tasmania’s Five Best Neighborhoods to Stay in
I’m sure after that little breakdown, you have a bit of an idea of where to stay in Tasmania that will suit your fancy! But I want you to be 100% confident in your decision, so let’s break down the five best cities to stay in on this beautiful island.

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQs About Where to Stay in Tasmania
Got a burning question about Tassie and where the bloody hell to stay, well I’ve got you covered mate!
What To Pack For Tasmania
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Tasmania
Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Tasmania.
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Tasmania
After writing this, I am just itching to get back over to Tassie. We could all use some good old rugged adventure from time to time. I mean sure, who doesn’t love a good beach, but Tassie just offers something deeper and more primitive.
Hopefully, this guide has given you some insight into where to stay in Tasmania and what each region offers. Each little nook of Tasmania offers something unique.
Personally, I would not miss Cradle Mountain and Hobart. Both of these destinations will give you something totally unique and a bloody great time. Spend some days being cultured and then enjoy some nights on the goon in the city! Wash it all away in the fresh mountain air, hiking your way to the top of Cradle Mountain.
