Have you ever swam in a sea as cristal clear as a swimming pool? Well, you can in Cozumel.
Cozumel is a Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea that is somewhat extraordinary. So obviously, it’s often frequented by cruise ships where travelers spend one day scuba diving in the Mesoamerican Reef system.
The Mesoamerican Reef is the second largest reef system in the world, just losing out to the Great Barrier Reef, which makes for incredible visibility of sea life.
Cozumel is often compared to Cancun, but it’s a world away. Cozumel is an island and has far fewer crowds, making it popular with backpackers who want to experience living in a picturesque paradise.
Due to the island’s size, there are limited hostels. The hostels that are highly rated are mostly in or near San Miguel, the “city center” of Cozumel. If you’re craving more peace, hostels just outside of San Miguel which may be more to your liking.
With that in mind, it’s important to find a hostel that is both safe and accommodates your needs. The place that you stay in affects the ENTIRE trip. So I’m gonna help you out with the best hostels in Cozumel that are actually worth it.

What to Expect from Hostels in Cozumel
Hostel living can be a life-changing experience. You never quite know who you may meet and on an island like Cozumel, you’ll likely find other travelers to share activities that you want to do too!
Swap stories, laughs, and stay up all night talking to strangers about their lives are memories of traveling in Mexico. It’s easy to see why travelers opt for a hostel over a hotel, regardless of their budget, to indulge in that feeling of being around those that share the same passion for traveling.
In terms of the best hostels in Cozumel, there is little variety. But those I have picked have their own unique vibe. You’ll find a range of hostels with private dorms, double-bed dorms, group dorms, and even hostels for larger groups.
As you might expect, group dorms are the most affordable option. Private rooms are a little more pricey. However, if you’re staying for a long time or just simply can’t go without an ensuite, it’s worth the extra cost.
Dorms obviously offer little to no privacy. Also, if you’re visiting Cozumel during its tourist season (November to January) the dorms will likely be full, so be prepared for a lot of socializing. They can either be mixed or female-only and usually have a shared bathroom.
Here is what you can expect to pay per night:
- Private rooms – $35 – $55
- Group rooms – $12 – $20
The room choice is not the only factor to consider. The location and the services that the hostel are also important.
As mentioned, Cozumel is quite a small island. Therefore, many of the hostels are nearby to each other.
San Miguel is the tourist hotspot in Cozumel. The streets are bloody charming with shopping areas and the best nightlife entertainment. It is also conveniently close to the airport and coast for scuba diving and snorkeling.
You’ll find that I have used Hostelworld to gather the best hostels in Cozumel. This is my favorite website to use when booking hostels online.
The website formulates a list of the hostels in the area and previous guests leave detailed and honest reviews – which is how I find all the best hostels. Hostelworld also has discounts for budget backpackers that you may not receive if you book directly…
Embrace island living and go all out with limited Wi-Fi connection, group rooms, and spend your entire day at the beach. If you’re traveling in a group, select a modern hostel to keep everybody satisfied.
The 5 Best Hostels in Cozumel
To make your trip planning process even more simple, each of the hostels listed has been selected because of their high rating and glowing reviews. So, you can know that no matter which one you choose, you’re in for a great time.
I have also paired each hostel with a specific identifier to help you find the hostel that matches the type of experience you wish to have. However, hostels in Mexico are versatile and offer both group and private dorms, so if your first choice isn’t available, check out another.
With all that being said, here are the five finest hostels in Cozumel!

Those were the best hostels in Cozumel and honestly, despite the limited availability, these five hostels really did exceed my expectations. I’m glad to find that there are a variety of hostels for solo travelers, large groups, and those traveling on a budget. Plus, they all seem to inherit the laid-back Mexican vibe that is ever present in Cozumel.
If you’re struggling to pick your favorite, I would go for the Amigos Hostel. The swimming pool in this hostel sold me and – combined with beautiful gardens and tropical wildlife – you really can’t fault it.
It definitely has more of a resort than a hostel vibe. You’ll also be just outside of the city center, so you’ll be away from the noise late at night but in close proximity to all the fun.
Whichever you choose, a hostel provides the perfect excuse to spend a little more money on attractions, experiences, and just genuinely living life to the fullest. Anyways, you’ll likely be spending much more time underwater than you will on land, right?
