20 BEST Hostels in Edinburgh (2019 • Insider Guide!)

Interested?! PIN NOW, Read later

One of the more underrated cities of the UK – Edinburgh is absolutely amazing.
While a bit on the costly side, Edinburgh is truly a gem of the UK as you get to see the modern Scotland clash with the history of the UK. Castles. Food. Pints. Edinburgh has got it all!

But with dozens of registered hostels, it can be overwhelming to know where to start, which is exactly why I made a list of the 20 best hostels in Edinburgh, broken down by YOUR interests.

I’ve separated Edinburgh’s finest hostels into different categories, so you can identify your travel needs and book your hostel with confidence. Then you can get back to what really matters – backpacking Edinburgh!

Quick answer: The Best Hostels in Edinburgh

Best Hostel in Edinburgh

What to look for in the Best Hostel in Edinburgh

Not all hostels are created equal. Each property will specialize in different things. Some offer the lowest prices, others offer the coolest experience. The trick is identifying what your specific needs are so you can book your hostel quickly and with confidence. Do you need a space to work? A place to party? Or somewhere a bit quieter?

When putting this list together, there were a few things in particular I took into consideration.

  • Location –  Don’t stress too much about where your hostel is located. With only 1/2 a million residents, Edinburgh is fairly small and compact. It’s joy to walk, and even if the weather is poor (like a 95% chance in the UK) the bus system is great and can easily get you from place to place.
  • Price – By international standards Edinburgh is quite expensive, but by UK standards it’s a bit easier to pinch a penny. Price of travel puts Edinburgh at $71 a day, but that can definitely be cut down by watching your alcohol consumption and trying to find a hostel that has a few free…
  • Amenities – One of my favorite travel hacks (and #70 on this list) is to find hostels that offer free breakfast. Sure, the price of brekkie might be incorporated into the price of the hostel, but only ever so slightly. In an expensive destination like Scotland, the couple extra bucks for a free hostel breakfast will add up, especially when a proper Scottish brekkie runs a good £7.
Psst! Heading to a hostel? Don’t forget to pack a padlock! It’s well worth having one so you can secure your locker and protect your stuff!
