It depends what you're after. Crete is great for beaches, hiking and food, Ios is famous for its nightlife, Naxos offers a more laid-back mix of beaches and villages, while Corfu is a brilliant starting point for exploring the Ionian Islands. Don't be afraid to look beyond the famous names either.

Yes, although popular islands can get seriously expensive in summer. Travel in the shoulder seasons, stay in hostels or budget accommodation, eat at local tavernas and use public transport to keep costs down. Mainland Greece and some of the less-visited islands can also be much better value.

Greeks are generally warm and sociable, and food and family are a huge part of everyday life. When visiting churches and monasteries, dress respectfully by covering your shoulders and knees, and don't be surprised if meals run late and stretch well into the evening. A little kalimera (good morning) and efcharistó (thank you) will also go a long way.

Greek food goes way beyond gyros and Greek salad, although both are worth eating your body weight in. Try moussaka, souvlaki, fresh seafood, spanakopita and local cheeses, and don't leave without trying a proper Greek breakfast or some baklava. Each region and island has its own specialities, so eat locally whenever you can.
