Italy
Italy is one of those rare places that actually lives up to its reputation. It's crowded, sure, but don't let that put you off. There's plenty to uncover, from tiny Tuscan villages to epic hikes in the Dolomites. Top it all off with ridiculously good food, and you've got a true backpacker delicacy!

Italy Travel FAQs
How long do you need to backpack Italy?
Two weeks is enough to see some of Italy's biggest highlights, such as Rome, Florence and Venice. Three to four weeks gives you more time to explore at a slower pace and venture into places like Tuscany, Puglia or the Dolomites.
Is Italy expensive to backpack?
It can be, particularly in cities like Rome, Venice and Milan during peak season. Hostels, local trattorias, supermarkets and travelling by train can help keep costs down, while staying outside the main tourist centres is often much better value.
What's the best way to travel around Italy?
Trains are generally the easiest way to travel between Italy's major cities, with high-speed services connecting places like Rome, Florence, Milan and Naples. Regional trains and buses are useful for smaller towns, while renting a car can make sense if you're exploring rural areas or the coast.
What is aperitivo in Italy?
Aperitivo is an Italian pre-dinner tradition involving drinks and small bites, usually enjoyed in the early evening. Order something like an Aperol Spritz or a glass of wine and you'll often get snacks included, making it a great way to experience Italian food and social culture without spending a fortune.
